What is an orthotic?

A custom-made orthotic is a medical device used to assist a foot that fails to function normally. It is a removable insert and is placed inside a shoe to improve the biomechanics of the foot.

How does an orthotic work?

An orthotic will work by correcting biomechanical misalignments, assisting in stability and re-establishing proper weight distribution of the foot.

Who will benefit from an orthotic?

The primary beneficiaries of orthotics are those who are suffering from foot pain as a result of a foot misalignment, such as those who are “flat-footed”. Imbalances in the foot may also affect other joints up the kinetic chain and may also cause knee, hip and back pain. Your practitioner will assess your gait pattern and perform a complete biomechanical evaluation, to determine if custom made orthotics is right for you.

How do you make the orthotics?

There are different ways to measure or obtain an imprint of your foot. At PhysioFit Health & Rehab, we create an image of your foot using a foam imprint or plaster cast, which will eventually be laser-scanned into the computer to make a 3-D image. This sample, along with the results of your biomechanical evaluation will be sent to an appropriate lab for manufacturing.

Does OHIP cover the cost of orthotics?

Unfortunately, custom made orthotics are not covered by OHIP. You may be covered under your employer’s extended health care plan.

Do I need a physician referral for orthotics?

You do not require a physician’s note for the purpose of having your foot assessed and having a custom orthotic made for you. However, many insurance companies require a physician’s note stating that the orthotics is medically necessary before they will issue reimbursement. Please check your health care benefits plan.
